How many websites does one person need?
In the 30-ish years I have used the internet, I have lost count of the number blogs I have created. My first blog was about the Red Sox, a team I used to love and now love to be annoyed by. I have existing blogs on my adventures to baseball stadiums around the country (it has not been updated in 13 years because in that time I have only been to Hadlock Field and Fenway Park), running (I’m still running, but I’m not blogging about it very often) and creating (I haven’t updated that since late 2020 because I haven’t felt very creative).
So why am I on Substack?
Really, I don’t know.
Substack is a space I have explored first because writers I respect and admire (Jeff Pearlman, Austin Kleon) have joined the platform, second because more and more journalist are using the platform as a way to make a living after losing jobs at newspapers across the country, and finally, a few friends (Marcy and Dave) are sharing about their process on various projects there.
I have thought about how I could use Substack for myself and I still don’t have the answer. Maybe I hope it will spark my creative juices, that sitting here in front of my laptop with a cursor blinking at me will invite the muse to pay me a visit (I have a lot of thoughts on his so called muse, maybe I’ll share them here at some point). Maybe it’s a side-hustle that turns into my full-time hustle. Maybe it is a way to flex the creative muscles I don’t get to flex at my creative job very often (I mean my writing muscle).
I’m probably here for all of those reasons. I’m still working that out.
In the meantime, I’m going to scope the place out, continue reading the writers and friends I admire for doing the work I want to do, and hopefully find more writers to follow, more of their work to enjoy.
I’m on Substack for now, who knows, I’m a few months I may create another website somewhere else about something else.
Maybe this is the one website to rule them all! A place where all the Scotts can find a home. Why not write about the Red Sox or baseball stadiums or running here, too? Any which way, I'm so glad you're here. Austin Kleon is who inspired me to start one too. "Show Your Work." He convinced me that it would be helpful to be transparent about the process and so far it's super helpful. Can't wait to see what it does for you!
